Valkenburg … some history.
For many thousands of years before the Christian era, there was human habitation in the Geul Valley. Many objects found and various foundations of constructions are evidence of intensive population in Roman times. The first written record of Valkenburg dates from the year 1041. The document bears the date February 15, 1041 and the name Falchenberch is clearly legible.
According to historians probably Old Valkenburg is meant.
About the middle of the nineteenth century, vacationers and day trippers discover the unique and pristine environment where Valkenburg is located and visit the town for a day or spend a short vacation. It was initially only for the happy few, but the three hotels in Valkenburg in those days soon grew to many more. The construction of the railway Valkenburg-Aachen in 1853 with a castle-like station in Valkenburg is an important step towards opening up the before relatively inaccessible Geul town. It attracted many passengers to disembark.
They also discovered the impressive castle ruins with lots of scenery in the surrounding area. Valkenburg is also known as “Bath” Valkenburg or “Marl City”. You will see the warm yellow color both underground and above ground in the town and its immediate surroundings.
Valkenburg has many attractions and sights such as castles, museums and amusement parks. Thermae 2OOO (baths and spa), the spa park and the Holland Casino on top of the Cauberg enjoy great fame. Cozy shops, restaurants, terraces, the river Geul and historic buildings typify the streets of Valkenburg. On the outskirts of the town you can go on a wonderful hike or biking tour in the hills.
That is the best description of life and holidays in the South of Limburg. Besides nature, landscape, culture, folklore and architecture, there is also the gastronomy. Burgundian is the best word to describe it. Good food has to accompanied by a glass of wine from Valkenburg’s own or nearby vineyards. South Limburg’s proud wines have names like Domaine de Blaireaux, Stokkemer Wingerd, Weingoed Fromberg and the St.Pietersberg near Maastricht.
